Central Victorian Day Hikes

The Central Highlands of Victoria is full of history, buzzing towns and a lot of nice hiking. I've been lucky to visit a few times over the years and I've only just scratched the surface of what is here.

Below is a list of hikes I've done in the area, mainly based out of Daylesford but each time I return there will be more hikes added.

Short Walks near Daylesford

Lake Daylesford Loop

Length - 2.8km (Loop) 

Time - 1 Hour

One of the most iconic locations in Daylesford, this man made lake is home to a lovely loop trail that takes you around the edge of the water, providing some tranquil scenes to enjoy.

Hikes near Castlemaine Victoria

Leanganook Loops

Length - 10.7km (Figure 8) 

Time - 3-5 Hours

Located north east of Castlemaine in Mount Alexander Regional Park, the Leangonook Loops form a stunning walk trail that utilises part of the Goldfields Track.

Walks near Daylesford Victoria

Mount Franklin

Length - 1.9km (Loop) 

Time - 1 Hour

Mount Franklin or Lalgambook (smoking ground) is an old volcanic caldera with a campground in the middle. Explore the caldera via the walk trail with some views over the surrounding landscape.

Hikes near Daylesford Victoria

Sailors Falls

Length - 1.8km (Loop) 

Time - 1 Hour

Exploring the fern filled valley near Daylesford that is home to Sailors Falls, this area contains a few natural springs that can be accessed via the picturesque short loop trail.

Hiking Trails near Daylesford Victoria

Tipperary Track

Length - 17.6km (One Way) 

Time - 4-6 Hours

Following a section of the Goldfields Track between Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, this is one of the more scenic parts of the route with plenty to see and explore along the way.

Hikes in Central Victoria

Werribee Gorge Circuit Walk

Length - 7.6km (One Way) 

Time - 2-3 Hours

One of the best day hikes near Melbourne, the Werribee Gorge Circuit Walk takes you high above the Werribee River before dropping down and meandering along with the river course.

Botanic Garden in Daylesford

Wombat Hill Botanical Gardens

Length - 1.6km (Loop) 

Time - 1 Hour

One of the must visit places in Daylesford, explore the stunning botanical gardens on this loop trail where you'll get some amazing views and appreciate the different flora that is found here.
