Dog Friendly Hikes in the South West

Below is a guide to the hiking trails in the South West of Western Australia that you can take your dogs to for a fun day out. As I visit more trails I will be adding to this list so there are a few more to come.

Balingup Racecourse Reserve

Where - Balingup

Length - 3.1km (Loop)

Take a walk around the old forest lined racecourse, followed by a wander on the Possum Tree Walk. Look for wildflowers from late winter through spring.

Big Brook dam

Where - Pemberton

Length - 4.2km (Loop)

Combining the beautiful Karri Forest and the lake, Big Brook Dam is a really enjoyable walk. Keep an eye out for the cabins that provide a fun learning experience.

Blackwood River Walk

Where - Bridgetown

Length - 5.2km (Return)

Running along the edge of the Blackwood River, this tranquil walk provides a great experience as you look for the different birds that call this place home.

Coastal Walk Trail

Where - Augusta

Length - 1.8km (One-Way)

Exploring the coastline between Dead Finish and the Augusta Boat Harbour, this is part of a longer walk close to Augusta that is the best way to explore town.

Ellen Cove to Albany Port

Where - Albany

Length - 6.1km (One-Way)

Taking you along the edge of King George Sound between Middleton Beach and Albany, this is a great way to explore the coast and the amazing views.

Golden Valley Tree Park

Where - Balingup

Length - 4.6km (Loop)

A unique park in WA thanks to the arboretum providing a more northern hemisphere experience with the deciduous trees shedding their leaves in autumn.

Harewood Forest Walk

Where - Denmark

Length - 2.7km (Loop)

Located north of Denmark, explore the towering Karri Forest along Scotsdale Brook, with plenty of fungi and wildflowers to enjoy.

Karri Lake Trail

Where - Quinninup

Length - 3.3km (Loop)

Located in Quinninup, the 3.3km loop takes you around Lake Katherine where you'll experience lovely Karri Forest, views over the water and plenty of fresh air.

Lake Seppings

Where - Albany

Length - 2.9km (Loop)

Located in the holiday spot of Middleton Beach, Lake Seppings is a great place to sit and watch for birds, along with spotting wildflowers in spring.

Lions Forest Trail

Where - Donnybrook

Length - 3.0km (Loop)

Just outside Donnybrook is a loop trail taking you through the forest and during spring the wildflowers provide an amazing display.

Luke Pen Walk

Where - Albany

Length - 11.3km (Return)

Explore the banks of the Kalgan River as it winds through the countryside. A stunning place in spring, this is a tranquil and thoroughly enjoyable walk.

Margaret River Heritage Trail

Where - Margaret River

Length - 6.0km (Figure 8)

This figure 8 trail exploring the Margaret River is a really lovely experience in the forest. Take an hour or two to enjoy the peaceful surrounds of this trail.

Mokare Heritage Trail

Where - Denmark

Length - 4.8km (Loop)

The Mokare Heritage Trail explores both sides of the Denmark River, with a mix of Karri Forest and Paperbarks, this is a fantastic experience.

Mount Adelaide Nature Trail

Where - Albany

Length - 2.2km (Loop)

This gentle loop walk around the sides of Mount Adelaide provides some beautiful vistas overlooking King George Sound.

Mount Clarence Heritage Trail

Where - Albany

Length - 3.2km (Loop)

Exploring the hills above Albany, along with the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial, this little loop provides a variety of different views over the Albany area.

Mount Melville Circuit Trail

Where - Albany

Length - 4.3km (Loop)

One of the best vantage points you can get close to the centre of Albany, Mount Melville provides a variety of locations to look out over the city centre.

Point Possession Heritage Trail

Where - Albany

Length - 5.1km (Out + Loop)

Located close to Albany as the crow flies but a world away in real terms, this out and back on the Vancouver Peninsula is a great escape with plenty to enjoy.

Riverslea Run

Where - Margaret River

Length - 2.2km (One Way)

Following the Margaret River, this relaxing meander through the forest provides plenty of nice views of the river and forest surrounding the newer suburbs. 

Skeleton Bridge Walk

Where - Boyup Book

Length - 5.9km (Loop)

Taking you from the old railway station and out towards an old wooden bridge over the Blackwood River, this walk is a great way to explore the area.

Torbay Nature trail

Where - Albany

Length - 2.6km (Loop)

A meander around the wildflower filled forest lining Unnidup Creek near Torbay. Visit in spring for the best scenery as you explore the remnant bushland.

Whale trail

Where - Augusta

Length - 4.2km (One Way)

Exploring the coastline of Flinders Bay near town, this one way trail takes you from the new Augusta Boat Harbour to the mouth of the mighty Blackwood River.

Wilderness Ocean Walk Trail

Where - Denmark

Length - 8.1km (One Way)

Colloquially called the WOW Trail, this one certainly lives up to the name with some stunning views overlooking the coastline near Denmark.
